Gleaning Program

From Farm to Families: No Food Left Behind

Gleaning is a critical, volunteer-powered effort to recover surplus produce from farmers markets—fresh food that would otherwise go to waste. FARMore WA partners with Sustainable Ballard and Family Works to collect this excess every Sunday at Ballard Farmers Market, and seasonally at Wallingford and Madrona markets. The food, originally grown on local farms, makes its way to urban communities, extending its life and purpose. Delivered to local food banks like Ballard Food Bank and Family Works, it nourishes families and individuals in need, ensuring the bounty of our farms benefits as many as possible.

To help carry this vital mission forward and directly support your community, volunteer with us. Contact Olivia at gleanballard@gmail.com to get involved.

Hear From Our Volunteers

I love gleaning because it is something concrete, I can do to help neighbors in need. I work with wonderful volunteers, FM staff, and vendors, and it’s delightful to see the market and market produce change as the seasons turn.

Every time I glean, I run into someone from the neighborhood, or a colleague/friend visiting it promotes such a sense of community for me. Plus, I get to see what’s growing!
